“Baby, Take My Hand” by M. Jayne – After surviving a bullet to the brain, a detective hunting a serial killer is drawn to a mysterious man.
A woman, alone, in a dark, desolate space, unsure and afraid.
This photo is representative of “Baby, Take My Hand” in multiple ways.
The most obvious is that the opening scene takes place in an alley with a female murder victim. Plus, the photo speaks to where Liz Barlow is mentally and emotionally. Two years prior, she took a bullet to the brain. She is a different person now. She feels cut off from her old life and unsure about why she was targeted. She is alive but only living a half-life. The uncertainty weighs heavily upon her.
I have always been fascinated with the idea that there is more at the end of this life. I subscribe to the belief that if different civilizations have recorded happenings since the beginning of time, then it is true. The ancient Greeks spoke of Charon, the ferryman. Gaelic lore tells of the banshee. The Talmud mentions the Angel of Death.
When the time came that I needed to come up with an idea for this story, I knew that I wanted to try something different. I’d recently read the Aisling Grimlock Series by Amanda M. Lee and Hell’s Geek by Eve Langlais. I blame their influence, although my story is darker. Plus, I love it when my stories have a theme song. Blue Oyster Cult’s haunting guitar riff and lyrics remind us that death is never far away.
Snippet from “Baby, Take My Hand”…
I looked out the Uber’s window as it moved through the city. I had a feeling I would see Darius Dux tonight. Before getting injured, I’d often gone out to burn off steam. In the back of my closet, I’d found the dress and shoes I was wearing now. The deep blue dress had built-in support for my boobs and was cut so low in the back that I knew my thong’s strap would show as my hips swayed in my three-inch heels. I’d let my blond hair air-dry. I had the “just out of bed” look. My make-up was neutral except for my smokey eyes.
I was going hunting. The need to meet Mr. Dux was compelling me. Maybe the bullet’s damage was starting to manifest. This trip seemed unnecessary and possibly dangerous. Yet here I was, dressed for sin and looking for answers. It was a long shot that he could be our killer. My gut told me that I’d know within a few minutes of being in his presence.
“Are you sure this is the address?” the driver asked as she peered down the dark alley. “I can wait…”
I increased her tip. “No thanks.” I slid out and strutted down the alley. I was here to observe and to be seen. Hopefully, he would approach.

Yes, bears, wolf, and dragons so far. Bears are favorites.
Love paranormal romances… I am big on shifter stories.
I do enjoy paranormal. Do witches count?
I like paranormal stories. i enjoy when the ghost is built into the story like granddad is still hanging around or grandma talks to the spirits to help people out.
I like almost all paranormal stories–it’s so interesting to read scenarios that don’t fit our usual expectations for how the world works! I think ghosts are fascinating, as are shifters…
