In One Picture: N.J. Walters’ “Perfect Stranger” (Contest)

UPDATE: The winner is…flchen!

“Perfect Stranger” by N. J. Walters – An undercover DEA agent must keep his identity secret from the woman he’s falling for, a woman he’s also investigating.

When I started thinking about writing this story, the first image I had was of a man who resembled a modern-day Viking standing outside the diner where he’s working as a short-order cook as part of a DEA undercover operation. He’s investigating everyone who works at the diner, including the waitress who he offers a ride home on his motorcycle.

That one trip will change both their lives.

I couldn’t find a picture that worked, so I cheated and used two pictures to make one.

Snippet from “Perfect Stranger”…

Jax hated the expression of defeat etched on her face. “I can give you a ride home on my bike.” He motioned to the motorcycle parked in front of the diner. It was old and had some miles on it, but it ran just fine.

She nibbled on her bottom lip. “Thanks, but that’s probably not a good idea.”

“Because I’m an ex-con?” His stomach knotted, the lie sitting like a lead weight in his belly. Going undercover for the DEA was something he’d done multiple times. He normally didn’t give a shit what people thought of him when he was on assignment. Until now.

She rubbed her hands up and down her arms. “You seem like a nice guy, Jax.”

He snorted and shook his head. “Sweetheart, I’m anything but nice, but I’d never do anything to hurt you.” He prayed he wasn’t lying. Drugs were being distributed through the Backstreet Diner. It was his job to get enough evidence to bring down as much of the operation as possible. The owner was up to his neck in it. So were the other cook and at least one other waitress. The verdict was still out on Dora. She kept to herself, did her job, and went home. This was a chance to dig a little deeper into her personal life.

Yeah, right. It was an excuse to get closer. From the second they’d been introduced, he’d fought the urge to grab her and run, to protect her. He spent half his days watching her instead of the other players. Get your head on straight. She’s a possible suspect. Keeping his mind on the job had never been a problem…until Dora.

“What do you say?” he cajoled, swallowing a groan when she nibbled on her bottom lip. He prayed she didn’t look down at the front of his jeans. There was no hiding his hard-on. She’d surely run if she noticed. Or she’d use her pepper spray on him. It didn’t surprise him she’d been ready to fight back. There was fire lurking beneath her quiet exterior.

“I could call a cab.”

“Why would you when I’m right here.” No way was he leaving her standing on the street by herself. He held out the helmet in his hand. “Put this on.”

She shook her head. “It’s not safe for you to drive without one.”

Taken aback, all he could do was stare. No one worried about him. Not his bosses or coworkers. Certainly not his family. He didn’t have any, raised in foster homes until he’d aged out. The genuine concern in her eyes cracked the hard shell around his heart.

  1. I’m with Latifa! Definitely cheeseburger and fries and a chocolate milkshake if they are known for it.

  2. french toast if I’m in the mood for breakfast fare or a BLT or grilled cheese if I’m not.

  3. Oh it has been ages since I last went to a diner… Loved the breakfast special at this one place back east I used to go to… I would get cheesy scrambled eggs with buttered rye toast, fries and OJ… yum… I miss that place!

  4. It kind of depends what my mood is & what I might catch my eye when looking over the menu. Usually, though it’s a grilled ham & cheese, a BLT, turkey club or bacon cheeseburger. Fries naturally with any of them.

  5. I love to order fish and chips or a nice salmon dinner with seeweed salad if available.

  6. I love diner home fries! I always get my bacon crispy. And then there is diner coffee. Yum!

  7. I love diners also. I enjoy breakfast in its many varieties as I do not have to clean up.

  8. I love breakfast too–I’m a fan of the basic scrambled eggs and bacon and hashbrowns, or a country skillet mix…
