Cowboys & Zombies by Cindy Tanner
Nothing can keep me from my cup of coffee—not the threat of zombies or a double-shot of sexy cowboy…nothing venti-ed, nothing earned
What inspired me to write about a cowboy during the zombie apocalypse? Earlier this year I finished my debut series which is contemporary romance. I have been world building and drafting paranormal stories for years. I have always been fan of that genre from books, graphic novels, and movies. I love getting to experience the fantastical. I have always been a daydreamer so it fits. When the prompt for Boys Behaving Badly announced as Cowboys, I dabbled with a few more traditional ideas then thought what is a wild scenario I could put my characters in? Zombies were the winner, in part because it’s something I haven’t written about. So the idea of Lane and Rebecca, the rag tag duo of cowboy and coffee addicted barista, was born. ~Cindy Tanner
Snippet from “Cowboys & Zombies”…
“Rest?” I’m looking down at him and my voice makes him pop an eye open. “We are one flimsy door away from being eaten alive!” Panic fills my tone as the truth in my words hit me.
“How is this any different than sleeping in the truck?” He smiles, showing off the dimple hidden under days’ worth of scruff.
“That truck is metal. A beast of a thing, and we always park somewhere not full of zombies!” My voice rose enough to draw them closer to the door. A loud thump makes me jump as Lane pats the empty space beside him.
“Relax, Rebecca. I’ve got you. Sleep if you can. Try to relax and rest if you can. Worrying right now isn’t going to help.” Lane yawns. Not panicking seems like the least I owe him. My options are limited to reliving my college days and hugging the toilet or taking the space next to him. It isn’t a choice I need to think about. Settling thigh to thigh with Lane, I inhale. He smells like leather and dust. An odd combination that is both uniquely him and soothing.
“Hey, Lane?” I ask quietly, chewing on my lip as I wait for him to respond.
His answer is a deep chuckle.
“I’m not going to be able to relax right now, and soon, I’m going to start to fidget, which I know in this tight space will drive you nuts.” I’d drive myself insane without a distraction. There was barely enough room for us to sit. If I’m left to my own devices, I know I’m going to start to panic over the tight space. “Tell me something I don’t know. I need to think about something else.”
“I’ve wanted to kiss you since I first laid eyes on you.” Lane’s voice is deep. His words make my stomach flip.
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. Did he mean that, or is it just a means to get me speechless? If so, job well done, cowboy.
