Solar Flare by Ava Cuvay

An interplanetary rancher recruits hired guns to help herd her livestock and falls into the arms of their sexy leader

“…like a crehdisth worm to a solar flare.”

I’ve used this phrase in my Sci-Fi Romance novels from my Heart Nebula Series, meant to give the impression of powerful attraction. When Delilah put the call out for Cowboys short stories for this year’s anthology, I knew it was my chance to bring that phrase to life. But what does a crehdisth worm look like? What would be intensely attracted to a solar flare, and why? Then I watched videos of magnificently giant manta ray herds swimming in graceful loop-de-loops to feed on swarms of tiny plankton in the ocean. Put them in space, give them a slightly more translucent appearance, and make them HUGE… and you have a herd of crehdisth worms that needs a talented crew—and a strong Trail Boss—to drive them. ~Ava Cuvay

Snippet from “Solar Flare”…

The herd reached the grazing site just as the ejecta began to flow past on a solar wind. More gasps and exclamations of wonder transmitted as the worms opened their toothless mouths. Like ancient trolling boats with nets cast wide to catch food, the giant beasts tumbled and looped along the flow of the wind, swallowing plasma and particles from the star’s corona.

With each pass along the ejecta, visible only to the worms and on the specialized instrument panel of the cowpony, bright blue lines unfurled like lightning along their luminescent bodies. The churning, heaving mass of glowing beasts, flashes of blue, and their wings fanning like a lazy summer day enthralled Solarne. She’d forgotten what a majestic sight it was. And how lucky she was to have a lifetime to enjoy it.

    1. Latifa – Star Wars (especially the “first” one) is often considered a mashup of Western/Samuri set in in a galaxy far, far away. I love sci-fi because it’s easy to take a familiar theme, give it a cosmic setting, and it’s a whole new thing 🙂

    1. Colleen- Was it Star Wars? Or maybe Serenity (from the Firefly series?). Those are the two which come to my mind first. <3

    1. Mary — I confess I haven’t watched to new series. But I did see the movie with Yul Brynner… and was also a bit of an influence for my Silver Cyborg series. 🙂

  1. I’m pretty sure I saw West World with Yul Brynner but I honestly don’t remember much about it.

    1. ButtonsMom – I only remember it was a frightening concept that androids could “go rogue”.

    1. Debra – big Star Wars fan here! “Empire Strikes Back” is why I write sci-fi romance!
