by Anna Meadows

I don’t make much of a secret out of the fact that I have a type. Kate Moennig on “Young Americans” was my high school crush. If I still had a locker, the inside of the door might have a magazine tear-out of Rachel Maddow.

Dykey, butch, whatever you want to call it, I often write about it. A debutante’s tuxedo-wearing escort. A gardener who prefers to ignore the fact of her breasts. And, for Girls Who Bite, a fallen angel the narrator first mistakes for a boy.

Are these stories lesbian? Can love between two such masculine women be called lesbian? I say yes. Others might disagree. But if we write characters who claim their womanhood, and their desire for what women have under their clothes, no matter what those clothes might be, our stories are lesbian.

Does this mean I’ll never write stories about love between two feminine women? Hardly. Does this mean I don’t read such stories? Definitely not. In fact, they’re some of my favorites. But my attention as a writer is often captured by women who dress or act in a way more commonly thought of as male. There’s power in it, a power not so far from that of the female vampires revealing their magic in the stories of Girls Who Bite.

Now for the contest: Leave a comment here for a chance to win an 8” x 10” print of the above photo. I chose this print because I think it captures the feel of Girls Who Bite, and because I love photographing flowers that are soft, feminine, but not shy or demure. I can mail the print anywhere in the US (if you’re outside of the US, we’ll figure something out).

Thanks for stopping by, and don’t forget to stay tuned for new posts and contests. I’ll be back in September to talk a little bit about the mythology behind my story “La Caída.”

  2. Thanks for the giveaway. I love the picture. I am redoing my basement and I am searching for the right things to hang on the wall of my craft room. This would be perfect!

  4. I love to write butchy girls, too. In my historical, Beguiled, I have a chick who dresses as a soldier. And in my upcoming vampire duo with Delilah Devlin, I have a bass playing gal with a half sleeve of tats. Love ’em! But I’ve always been a sucker for Shane. I echo Adele – can’t wait to read your story!
