Purrfect in Venezia

Purrfect in Venezia

When my sister, Delilah Devlin, put the call out for submissions to the Sheshifters anthology, I already had an idea of where I wanted to set a shape shifter story. I’d recently been to Italy and the fabulous city of Venice. The place is unique, colorful and magical. The hotel we stayed in was like the hotel in the story. At first we couldn’t find our room. We climbed the narrow staircase to the floor we assumed it would be on but there was no room 207.

Down we went to ask the desk clerk where it was. He said go through the door for 204. Huh? Back up the staircase we went and pushed through the door marked 204, feeling like we were trespassing into another guest’s room. Alas, it led to another hallway with more doors. Still we couldn’t find the room 207. At the end of the hallway was a floor-to-ceiling mirror which we thought rather odd. About to give up and go back down the stairs to question the clerk once more, my daughter pressed her fingers to the mirror and it moved!

Three more rooms were hidden behind the mirrored door.

It gave me the idea for hidden doorways leading to magical, mystical places within the city, much like the one in Purrfect in Venezia.

Natalie is not a shifter, but on a previous trip to Venice, while still engaged to a man, she stumbles upon the hidden world of Venice and it’s strange and beautiful creatures. There she meets and falls in love with a gorgeous woman.

“Long, pale blond hair hung down around her waist in cascading natural curls. Ice-blue eyes with the strange elongated irises twinkled in the party lights. The fine sheen of hair coating every inch of her supple body glistened like silk.”

Natalie can’t commit to a relationship with the cat-woman, not because she fears the strange and beautiful creatures, but because she has unfinished business back home—an engagement she must break off—so she returns to her own world.

A year passes before she can go in search of Bella during Carnival. Has it been too much time? Will Bella still remember her? Will she still care for her?

What more romantic place to rekindle a lost love than the watery streets of Venice, where magic lurks around every corner?

  1. Oh wow this sounds like a story for me. Since I am lesbian I love it when women fall in love with other women. But it also sounds like you write other genres I also enjoy. So of course I will be adding another author to my list to keep my eyes out for. So keep writing. You are doing what I want to do and that is write in many genres.

  2. I really enjoy when an author uses a setting that she connected with so personally — it makes the story come alive for me as a reader. In this case, the layers of beauty and intrigue in Venice are the perfect background for a shapeshifting story.
